Regional Contemporary Art Funds (Frac) created in 1982 are institutions whose mission is to build public collections of contemporary art, make them accessible to all audiences, and develop ways of raising awareness of current creative work.

The Frac Grand Large has a collection of contemporary art and design from the 1960s to the present day, reflecting the international mix of its sources. Throughout the year, it organizes exhibitions in the region and across borders. Its partners are established art venues or third-party venues such as media libraries, schools, and community centers. It therefore favors co-construction and promotes synergies to reach remote audiences. The Frac offers to explore the major themes of its collection and is open to different subjects brought in by its partners.

In 2013, the Frac Grand Large acquired a museum building located in the Grand Large district, on the site of the former Dunkirk shipyards. A translucent vessel facing the sea, it houses exhibition and social spaces where visitors can enjoy an encounter with art. Its rooftop belvedere offers breathtaking views of the coastal landscape and the original industrial hall, while the storage areas in the rear half of the building facilitate the display of the collection on a very large scale.

In the Hauts-de-France region, the Frac Grand Large and the Frac Picardie complement each other’s outreach activities. Both are members of the Platform association – a group of regional contemporary art funds – and 50° nord – a cross-border contemporary art network.
