The Atelier du Livre d’Art et de l’Estampe de l’Imprimerie Nationale has its roots in the history of letterpress printing, since it was in 1538 that Francis I appointed the first king’s printer for Greek, a designation that is considered a founding act, from which the entire history of printed matter in France has developed, and a collection of punches unique in the world, classified as a historic monument in 1946, has been built up.
Braving the vicissitudes of history, the Imprimerie Royale, founded in 1640 by Richelieu, became the Imprimerie de la République, then the Imprimerie Impériale, and finally the Imprimerie Nationale. The Atelier du Livre d’Art et de l’Estampe boasts rare skills covering the entire typographic chain (design, engraving and typecasting, typesetting and letterpress printing) as well as intaglio printing, and develops projects involving its teams, know-how and production tools in the service of publishers and artists.
The Atelier du Livre d’Art et de l’Estampe will present its next publication, currently in press: with Voyages en Alexandrie, visual artist Robert Lobet and poet Bruno Doucey take us on a journey to the heart of the city of Alexandria, where past and present intertwine in twelve tableaux-tours.
