artist/ Romain-Sobota

France

Born in 1994 and based in Lille, Théo Romain-Sobota develops artistic work centred on the notions of trace, memory and dignity. His research explores our relationship with power and norms, as well as the way in which violent images — whether physical or digital — shape our individual and collective memory. His work is part of a form of engaged art, favouring medium- and large-scale plastic forms: sculptures and installations, often combined with drawing or video.
Winner of the Impulse! support programme in 2021, he became an artist supported by la malterie arts visuels and, in the same year, took part in a Franco-Iranian virtual residency organised as part of the 4th edition of Novembre Numérique. In 2024, he won the Wicar Prize from the City of Lille and, as a result, completed a creative residency in Rome in 2025.
Since 2014, his work has been shown in France and internationally in numerous venues, such as the Institut français Centre Saint-Louis, Rome; the Galerie Renard-Hacker, Lille; the Gare Expérimentale, Paris; PS Art Space, Perth; the idem+arts art centre, Maubeuge; the Art Au Centre exhibition circuit, Liège; the Plus Petite Galerie du Monde (ou presque), Roubaix; the Concept, Calais; Castel Coucou, Forbach; and the contemporary art triennial, Tournai.
