Jumaldi comes from a literary family, where he was mainly portraying unknown here, but he is labeled as one of the most dynamic and influential contemporary artists of his generation in Indonesian art. He is founder of the Jendela art group (Indonesia’s most prominent contemporary art collective) In each case, Jumaldi works by theme where icons or symbols depict the spiritual and existential struggle depict, both on a personal and collective level. Both text and nature objects translate on canvas his thoughts of times gone by. Memory, for Alfi, is therefore not synonymous to nostalgia for Alfi.
A series of Sisyphus (figure from Greek mythology) and the sisyphus work on the “never ending” story of the stone to the top of the mountain as punishment, brings him into a ”never ending story/ending torment” as an artist, but also as a human being. “The work is never finished…”
