Japon

Lives and works in Tokyo, Japan.
Meticulously cutting each piece by hand, Katsumi Hayakawa crafts dense cityscapes and urban districts from white paper. He assembles towers and various cube-like structures that are positioned in lengthy rows, resembling congested streets.
In his artworks, encompassing both paintings and cut-paper sculptures, Katsumi Hayakawa channels the essence of urban landscapes and architectural planning. He meticulously crafts objects using cubes and squares, reminiscent of skyscrapers and city layouts. The interplay of lines and colors within these structures forms intricate and dynamic patterns, echoing the bustling rhythms of urban life.

Drawing inspiration from modernist concepts like the grid, particularly reminiscent of Piet Mondrian’s “Broadway Boogie Woogie,” Hayakawa extends these explorations into his acrylic paintings.
