artist/ GULLY

FRANCE

Gully, born in 1977, is a French graffiti artist from the Paris region. He decided to change his pseudonym from graffiti artist to studio artist in order to remain anonymous. His first works under his new pseudonym appeared in 2008. He practiced graffiti intensively from 1992 to the mid-2000s. He changed his artist name, not feeling the need for his work on canvas to be associated with his past in the graffiti movement. Today, he devotes himself to studio work, although he often admits to putting on his old mask again, adrenalin being a driving force for this generation.
His primary inspiration comes from his discovery, a few years ago, of the Appropriation movement, which led him to attack all those he considers to be the sacred monsters of the art world. Today, Gully tells the stories of children enchanted by art, and more particularly by the paintings of its masters, in sumptuous architectural settings, in little stories that could be seen as comic-book panels, without dialogue, allowing the viewer to relate to the painting.
