Enes Bilal, known as Enki Bilal, is a French comic book creator and film director who was born in Belgrade, Serbia (then Yugoslavia), on October 7, 1951. His work falls partly within the science fiction genre and addresses themes such as time and memory. Bilal explores time through worlds where the past, present, and future are inextricably linked. His works touch upon themes that shape the future, such as the collapse of communism in the 1980s, religious obscurantism in the 1990s, and climate change in the early 2010s.
He frequently addresses the theme of memory—for instance, in the series *Le Sommeil du Monstre* (The Sleep of the Monster), where the protagonist uses his memory to travel back in time and recall events as far back as the very beginning of his existence. He also describes himself as being attuned to collective memory.
