artist/ DERAIN
France
André Derain (1880-1954) was a painter, sculptor, and co-founder of Fauvism. Born in Chatou, France, he studied at the Académie Julian and met Maurice de Vlaminck and Henri Matisse, with whom he developed the Fauvist movement, characterized by the use of pure and vibrant colors.
His works, such as “La Danse” and his landscapes of Collioure, embody this period of bold chromatic experimentation. Later, Derain moved away from Fauvism to adopt a more classical style, influenced by ancient art and the old masters.
Recognized as one of the major artists of the 20th century, he left a lasting mark on modern art before passing away in 1954 in Garches.
