DAMIEN DEMAITER
Born on 4 . June 1972 in France
Lives and works in his studio in Roubaix.

Making the invisible visible. Seizing the elusive. Without borders or fixed reference points. In a sometimes antinomic logic. At the turn of a gesture, a pigment, a colour, deep vibrations are exhaled. In his pictorial universe, Damien Demaiter is constantly seeking balance and harmony.

Damien Demaiter is one of those people whose destiny has decided for them. Nothing predestined him for painting. It was at secondary school that an art teacher, aware of his aptitudes, guided him towards this mode of expression and communication.
With this support, he exhibited for the first time at the age of 13.

It was at the Auguste Renoir school that, for three years, he honed his skills and his network of artistic encounters. Immersed in the wonders and emulation of Paris, he developed an astonishingly eclectic network of youthful acquaintances, all far removed from his passion, but who nourished him in every sense of the word. He was accepted at Gobelins, the famous school of image, animation and graphic design. He left Paris to complete his studies at the École Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et Textile in Roubaix.
Damien Demaiter is constantly replaying his pictorial scales, challenging them, constantly putting himself at risk in order to surprise himself, rejecting the immutable, reinventing a dialogue each time and sometimes enjoying losing himself in the vast white space of the canvas.

Painting as a state of being –
Music, writing, a lament, an explosion, a rhythm… it is undoubtedly an expression that Damien Demaiter seeks to communicate… The artist’s organic paintings are moving, living objects composed of materials that clash and unite to melt into a mineral magma, brushed with sensitive lace. A strong abstract modern expressionist, a large part of the painter’s work revolves around movements marked by an innate sense of space, of the sometimes troubled and irritated atmosphere of his state of being.
Even if the atmosphere that emanates from his universe can be one of alternating turmoil, alienation and psychological tension, the majority of the artist’s pictorial career offers, in his view, a counterpoint of tranquillity and unbridled optimism. This double coding opens up several perspectives to his work, as do his various techniques and pictorial orientations. The breaks are controlled and calculated, allowing neither an overview nor an impression of confinement. The confusion in the processes is linked to the movement factor. The colours are generally vivid and rich in contrast, giving the strokes a sense of flight, dynamism, drive and, above all, the bubbling of life.
