Andrea Berthel is the creator of ‘Canned Koi Cosmology,’ a series begun in 2019 that captures the world in a fish tin. The works, rendered in bright pop art colours with humorous depictions of fish, also contain sharp observations on the political, philosophical, social and environmental issues of the day. The carp as a reflection of contemporary man.
Andrea Berthel uses a hyperrealistic style and paints mainly with oil paints, but often integrates other media such as metal leaf, acrylic paints and ink.
Berthel was born in Santiago de Chile in 1958 and has lived in various places, including South Africa, France, Switzerland, The Hague and various cities in Germany. She currently lives in Baden-Baden. The experience of frequent changes of residence has awakened in her an interest in art as a constant and encouraged her in her search for a unique means of self-expression.
