Born in Havana in 1947 into a family of craftsmen, Aconcha is a self-taught Cuban multidisciplinary artist.
An only child, Aconcha was brought up by members of her family, whose origins and backgrounds would later enrich her imagination. Her spiritual awakening came from her uncle Tata, a Santeria priest; her aunts trained her as a seamstress; her mother taught her to sing; and her father gave her an artistic awakening. To find her own path, she left Cuba in the late 60s and moved to Europe.
This marked the start of a long creative process in which fashion design, music and the visual arts came together. She modestly exhibited her first works (textiles) in the Paris region, before moving to Brussels. There she opened her own fashion design studio, ACONCHA. Exhibitions, fashion shows and partnerships followed until the early 90s.
In the mid-90s, Aconcha left fashion and her hectic life to retire to the south of France. She devoted herself to painting, drawing and singing, and held a number of exhibitions and concerts with her partner.
The raw, singular style of her work reflects her cultural heritage. Whether on canvas, paper, newspaper, cardboard, wood, plexiglass or textile, any material is conducive to the emanation of Orishas, the divinities of the Yoruba people from whom her Beninese grandmother came, intermingled with Buddhism (Chinese grandfather) and Catholicism.
