My work with cement started a little over 30 years ago. I’m interested in this material in many ways: the different possible grain sizes, the density of the mix, its reaction to humidity, and ultimately, its extreme matte quality and how it catches the light.
In doing the work, I pay a lot of attention to the gesture, like a breath, careful of drying, a real revealer.
My surfaces are colored throughout and also undergo many sprays while still wet, exploring intensity, rhythm, and light. I see my surfaces as having their own life, their own reality: they’re not images.
My approach is meant to be understated.
I also like to juxtapose surfaces that resonate with each other. One needs the other to exist.
I’m constantly searching for the spirit of the material…
