Imi Knoebel is a central figure in postwar German abstraction. A student of Joseph Beuys at the Düsseldorf Academy, he pursued a radically independent path focused on color, form, and material. His works range from monochrome panels to vibrant geometric compositions assembled from cut aluminum or wood. Knoebel investigates the autonomy of painting by reducing it to essential shapes and chromatic interactions. While rooted in Minimalism, his work embraces emotional intensity through bold color contrasts. Over decades, he has continually reexamined the limits of abstraction, questioning the boundaries between painting and object. Knoebel’s practice stands as a sustained meditation on the expressive and structural possibilities of non-representational art.
