Born in Osaka in 1940, Shigeyoshi Koyama’s childhood was marked by the experience of the Second World War and the memory of the incendiary bombings. After the war, he developed an early interest in drawing and painting. In 1965 he moved to Tokyo, dedicating himself fully to art, and in 1970 travelled to Paris via the Trans-Siberian Railway. His accidental arrival in Cadaqués was decisive, leading to contacts with Richard Hamilton and Salvador Dalí. Influenced by Eastern tradition, his work avoids perspective, strong contrasts and figurative elements. Faithful to landscape, he paints a muted, timeless light, dominated by greys, creating an immediately recognizable visual language.
