Born in 1988 in Anhui Province, China, and currently based in Lille, France, SongLin Ji has developed a multidisciplinary practice encompassing painting, sculpture, installation, photography and experimental video. His experiences in military service during his youth led him to reflect deeply on the dynamics of collective discipline and the behaviours that govern our lives in society.
In 2014, after studying traditional Chinese sculpture at Shenzhen University, he arrived in France to study at ESA Dunkerque/Tourcoing. The encounter between Chinese and Western cultures has greatly contributed to broadening his aesthetic and conceptual horizons.
Often rooted in his personal experiences, his work explores the complex relationships between the individual and the collective, memory and history. He questions the social structures, cultural symbols and behavioural norms that shape the individual, while reflecting on the means by which the individual can express their autonomy and uniqueness, in a form of subtle resistance to normative systems.
