artist/ Hadeler

The Netherlands

Half Peruvian and half German, Celia Hadeler graduated from the Willem de Kooning Academy in Rotterdam. Her work can be seen as a lifelong exploration that began in her teenage years, when she suffered from migraines and found calm in creating collages from folds discovered in fashion magazines. At art school, she refined this practice, continuing her search for the perfect fold—one capable of bringing the mind to rest.
Textile soon became her material of choice, the most natural medium through which to further pursue this research. After spending a year and a half in Peru mastering the craft of hand tufting, Hadeler reached the limits of what could be achieved by hand. Her pursuit of depth, the “perfect crease,” and her mastery of color, combined with continuous experimentation, eventually brought her back to the Netherlands, culminating in these breathtaking works.
Although flat in form, her soft textile wall pieces possess a dynamic energy that transports the viewer into another dimension. Through her unique approach, Hadeler brings traditional textile wall art into a new era of design and technique. In her Folds series, she employs the classic trompe-l’œil technique, skillfully playing with perception through optical illusion. Folds are everywhere—in a napkin on the table, the clothes we wear, or a bag caught in the wind. This everyday phenomenon continues to fuel her fascination and serves as her ongoing source of inspiration.
Hadeler’s work has attracted the attention of renowned interior designers and international design magazines. Her pieces have been exhibited during Milan Design Week and featured in Residence, Elle Decoration, Architectural Digest Italy, and WOTH Magazine.
