Sam Francis (1923–1994) was a leading American painter associated with Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting. After a serious World War II plane accident, he turned to art during a long hospital recovery. Influenced by Monet, Matisse, and lyrical abstraction, he developed a vibrant style centered on color, light, and fluid splashes. Working in the U.S., Europe, and Japan, he became one of the most internationally recognized American artists of his time. His expansive body of work continually explored movement, space, and the expressive power of color.
