Born on October 9, 1941 in Voiron, René BERTHET presented his first sculptures in 1968 in Chambéry. These were shown at numerous exhibitions and fairs, and entered international collections.
In 1990, he abandoned the forge for painting, “for color” he would say. “The inspiration for my painting is the same as for a sculptor: I’m looking for light, for a better place, full of beauty and elevation.
René BERTHET always lived and worked in his Voiron studio. He passed away on July 16, 2018, leaving us orphaned of a talent recognized by galleries and collectors.
René BERTHET’s sculpted and painted work is unique and atypical.
It draws us into the world of his dreams. Shut away in the sanctuary of his studio, in silence or to the accompaniment of classical music, he worked tirelessly, inscribing in his work the visions and perceptions that inhabited him. Through his canvases and sculptures, he wanted to convey metaphysical visions, the perception of another dimension, an elsewhere. René BERTHET’s aim was to show us what he imagined to be the confines of the infinite, his perception of the rumbling of worlds that are born and disappear. The harmony of shapes and colors translates what he imagined to be cosmic vibrations, the song of the stars and the subtle music of the heavens.
René BERTHET traveled through these “cosmic landscapes”, exploring them with the mind’s eye, without limits of space, embracing life in its totality. He witnessed the dawn and twilight of time; dazzled by a fairytale world, he immersed himself in the rhythms and impulses of the Universe.
At once powerful and subtle for those who decipher it, his work offers moments of intense joy and hope, and the contemplation of these dazzling visions leads us to the frontiers of thought and intellect, where the realm of the immaterial and unspeakable begins.
